For our second project, we were tasked with the challenge to create a video on the physical aspect of a certain sport and motion in that sport. We were debating whether to do quidditch (from the motion picture Harry Potter series), skydiving, or curling. As a result, we decided to do our video on the sport of muggle (non-magical) quidditch. We used the motion of throwing the quaffle (the ball used to score) to do this project. For the first few days, we created our script and storyboard so we could have a good idea of what our video would look like and build off of that. We then started filming clips of me throwing the quaffle into a goal from different distances and collected data from there. We collected data from when the ball touched my hand to where the ball went. We used this to find the horizontal, vertical, and total velocity and the force of the ball. We then polished the video with voice overs, editing, uploading, and presenting our final project.
Concepts Force - the push or pull on an object. Force is found using the equation F=ma. We used this to find the force of the quaffle when being thrown.
Horizontal Velocity - the rate of covered distance in a horizontal direction. Horizontal velocity is found using the equation v=d/t with the distance being how far the ball was thrown (in relation to our project).
Vertical Velocity - the rate of covered distance in a vertical direction. Vertical velocity is found once again by using the equation v=d/t but this time with the distance being how far upward the ball is thrown.
Total Velocity - the rate of covered distance in both a horizontal a vertical direction. The total velocity is found by making a vector diagram with the horizontal and vertical velocity and using the Pythagorean theorem
Mass - the amount of matter. We found the mass of the quaffle
Vector - arrows with length and direction. We used vectors to find the total velocity.
Reflection
We had a very short time period to do this project but it was easy to do if you were focused. We started off slow as a group and were thinking of how we were going to the idea of Quidditch well. Nobody in our group had much experience in editing and Quidditch was an unusual and a sport well known. Explaining it was a real challenge along with the editing. In the end, we finished by the deadline and did a good job with our video. Throughout the course of making this video, I picked up a few new skills. I learned that I can throw a quaffle pretty hard and far when I really try to. I need to work on contributing more by saying my ideas more than letting my group members do what they think is right. My group was a very great group and had amazing ideas. They carried me throughout this video and made it fun for me. This video was an amazing experience because I did two of some things I love to do: Sports and Science. We all had a great time filming the video and I would love to do it again.
